MADRID : 10 THINGS TO DO

10 THINGS TO DO IN MADRID

1. Go to the Mercado de San Miguel to try tapas. In this market, you can find all kinds of tapas: tapas with fish, charcuterie, cheese, vegetables, etc. The starting price is €1.50 and can go up to €7.

2. Discover the different squares of Madrid with many bars and restaurants, as well as their history. Visit La Puerta del Sol, Plaza de Santa Ana, Plaza de Oriente, Plaza de Ramales, Plaza de España, etc. However, our personal favorite was Plaza Mayor for its architecture.

3. Go to the Royal Palace. The entrance is not free, but right next to it, you can visit the colorful Catedral de la Almudena for free. Behind the Palacio Real, there is a park where you can take nice pictures in front of the monuments.

4. Go check out the Templo de Debod. This Egyptian temple is located in the middle of Parque del Oeste (West Park). You can visit the temple for free, but you might encounter a long queue. The park is also really nice, and from there, you have a lovely view.

5. Visit a museum. There are two important museums: the Museo Reina Sofía, a modern art museum with online tickets costing only €8, and the Museo del Prado, which costs double. However, the tip is to go between 6 pm and 8 pm because the entrance is free during those hours.

6. Get lost in the little streets of the town. Madrid is full of small and charming little streets. Our favorite was Calle de Álvarez Gato with its colorful tiles.

7. Do some shopping on Calle Gran Vía. Famous brands such as Zara, Stradivarius, Pull & Bear, Bershka, etc., are Spanish brands, so they are cheaper here.

8. Discover the neighborhood of Malasaña. Located in the north of Madrid, this nice and hipster area has many shops and a chill atmosphere.

9. Walk in El Retiro Park. This huge park offers boat rides on the lake, areas to lie down on the grass, and exhibitions in the Crystal Palace.

10. One of the best things in Madrid is to try the local food. Here, we will give you some addresses of restaurants that we liked.

  • Lateral: This is a chain of restaurants that serves small dishes, easy to share, good, and cheap. The one in Malasaña has a terrace, perfect for enjoying lunch under the sun. It cost us around €30 for two with drinks.
  • Taberna al Sur: This is a typical and small place where you will eat delicious and traditional food. It cost us around €30 for two with drinks.
  • Incan Brutal Bar: This is a trendy take on tapas. The cocktails were amazing, and the food was super good. It cost us around €50 for two with drinks.
